The Most Useful Tool in my Stained Glass Studio: An LED Light Board
If I could only keep one “extra” tool in my stained glass studio, beyond the absolute basics, it wouldn’t be the expensive running pliers or the best-of-the-best soldering iron, it would be my LED light board.
A simple LED light board quietly earns its place in my studio every single day.
For beginning stained glass artists especially, this tool solves multiple problems at once without taking up much space or draining your wallet. It’s one of those studio purchases that immediately makes the entire process smoother, cleaner, and more accurate.
What Is an LED Light Board?
An LED light board is a thin, illuminated tracing surface originally designed for artists and designers. In stained glass, it becomes a precision tool for pattern tracing, glass selection, and even cutting.
Think of it as turning your work table into a glowing drafting station.
Why I Use an LED Light Board Constantly
1. You Can Cut Glass Directly On It
This is the biggest reason I recommend one.
Because the surface lights up your pattern from underneath, you can place your pattern beneath the glass and then trace and cut directly over the illuminated lines. It creates a much clearer visual guide, especially when working with darker or textured glass.
More accurate cuts = less grinding.
And if you do stained glass, you already know the grinder is basically the tax collector of bad cuts. My least favorite step is grinding, so any extra minute at the grinder feels like approximately three business years long.
Using a light board helps me cut more confidently and waste less glass.
2. It Makes Tracing Patterns So Much Easier
Some glass is wonderfully cooperative. Other glass behaves like a foggy shower door with opinions.
An LED light board helps you trace patterns onto translucent and lightly textured glass far more easily because the light shines through the material. Instead of squinting and sometimes guessing, the pattern becomes crisp and visible over the light.

For stained glass artists, I usually recommend a larger board if your budget and studio space allows. I personally have two, one small one that I use daily for cutting and a bigger size that I use for larger stained glass panels.
A4 sizes work well for beginners and smaller suncatchers. This is the size I use daily, in fact it just lives over my Morton’s cutting grid. I cut on it all the time and I’ve had it for over three years and it’s still going strong!
